THE INNOVATIONS IN SUSTAINABLE FABRICS

In the last few years, consumers are becoming more conscious of what they are using in terms of fabrics and where it comes from. Fabric manufacturers are now creating innovative fabrics that are sustainable. Brands like Stella McCartney and high street shop H&M who are fans of using eco-friendly fabrics in their collections, which is amazing for the Earth. Fabrics made out of fruit is the newest craze in the fabric world, as well as fabrics that are made from eel skin and fish skin.


EXAMPLES OF INNOVATIVE FABRICS:


FISH AND EEL LEATHER


Fish and eel leather is one of the newest innovations out there to replace animal leathers. Animal leather has a lot of backlash, due to the environmental factors that it contributes and animal rights.

Eel and fish skins are usually disposed off after separated from the flesh, so it’s a great idea to use it for fabrics. There are now many designers that are using it, designers such as Dior and Prada are using it in their handbags and clothing.



WHY SHOULD WE START USING EEL AND FISH LEATHER?


It’s a great alternative to using animal leather as its usually thrown away so why not use it? Fish and eel leather is also very insulating and very durable. Probably one of the most eco-friendliest materials to be used in the fashion industry.


Eel and fish skin can be detached from the flesh without the need for toxic chemicals. Similar to other leathers, fish and eel leathers can be changed to any required colour and it will last many years. Also purchasing these leathers you are not supporting unethical methods which are done by leather manufacturers that are not ethical.

PINATEX - PINEAPPLE FABRICS

PINATEX:


Pinatex is one of the newest fabrics out there, which is made from pineapples that are normally disposed of. In order to make the pineapple leather the leaves are dehydrated and bonded together to form the pineapple leather. Brands are experimenting with Pinatex to create innovative clothing and footwear.


Pinatex fabric costs around £50 per meter, which is cheaper than animal leathers and is a vegan leather. Considering it doesn’t use any harsh chemicals in the process, it is a great alternative to real animal leathers.


QMONOS:


Qmonos is made from spider silk, the silk and microbes is bonded together to form the synthetic silk. The silk is 5 times stronger than steel but is so lightweight and adaptable. Spider silk is said to be one of the most multipurpose fabrics and is very resilient. In order to make the spider silk, there isn’t any dangerous steps involved and the spiders are not harmed during the process. The fabric hasn’t been used just yet by fashion designers.
